FREEDOM ON THE 4TH

Independence Day is upon us.
It’s a time we should reaffirm,
give thanks to our ancestors,
for the freedom they fought to earn.
It seems so many have forgotten
the troubles they endured,
to break away from tyranny,
so freedom would be insured.
Some will fly our flag,
but many won’t know the reason.
Most will find a fireworks display
much more to their pleasing.
Just ask 5 people from the street,
what we commemorate this day.
The answers will be varied,
you’ll be surprised at what they say.
Many have lost perspective
about the value of freedom.
In fact they could care less,
as long as we still feed em.
Some have never worked a day,
nor have many of their kin,
but most of them still smoke.
And, still drink their whisky, or gin.
“You can lead a horse to water
but you can’t make him drink.”
You can provide the tools,
but you still can’t make them think.
As long as the free money keeps coming,
we’ll never get them off their asses.
We need take away the money
unless they attend some classes.
Make them go to school,
to learn to earn a living.
Make them realize
there’s an end to all this giving.
Make them pass some tests
to show just what they’ve learned
no more free money
unless it has been earned.
Make them pass a drug test,
and maybe one for nicotine.
Take away the money
unless they prove that they are clean.
We’re into 3 and 4 generations
of the same family drawing welfare.
It’s their only way of life,
they’ve never been taught to care.
Why should our hard earned wages
be taxed to pay for their habits.
Make them so damn desperate
they’ll seek a way out & grab it.
I guess I wandered away
from my intentions for this writing
The 4th of July is a symbol.
It’s a way of reuniting.
We sometimes need reminders
of the meaning of this day,
so we don’t get distracted,
as did I, with what I just now had to say.

As for welfare cases, I agree with ending abuse of the system, but we should never forget that there are many who genuinely need help and that its hard for struggling people to go for help when they know they will be looked down upon, doubted, ridiculed...etc.
What you say rings through. My husband teaches GED classes and half of them don't know what the word democracy means! How sad.
