This poem was inspired by one titled SECRET PLACES,,,, written by LaBelle Rouge, known here on the Den as Poetess of the Heart.

As kids, during the fall & winter there were corn shocks standing all around our small farm. We used to crawl inside them & hollow out an area we could use as a little fort, or like an indian wigwam.

MEMORIES

Seemed, I spent the whole summer
goin to Sunday School,
but that left lots of time
for just acting the fool.

I grew up
near Teaspoon Corners,
just down the road
from my friend, Mary Warner.

At country school, during recess
we played a game called Mudgutter.
We made up the rules
then taught ‘em to one another.

When winter came
the game changed to "Fox & Geese"
played on the softball field,
the only place without trees.

We pilfered water melons
from Palmers farm,
(not the term we used,
but we meant no harm.)

We built us a forte
out back of the orchard,
played Cowboys & Indians,
got captured & tortured.

Homemade “sling shots”
& homemade fishin poles,
an hours walk
to the fishin hole.

We made a swimmin hole
by dammin’ up the creek,
usin rocks & sod
to patch the leaks.

Built a log cabin
back in the woods
with a couple of kids
from the neighborhood.

My brothers and sisters
and cousins and such,
were all country poor
and we didn’t have much.

But we all made do
and when the proper time came,
we joined the real world
and gave up on the games.

Course, that was decades ago,
now I’m aging fast.
It gets more and more difficult
to remember my past.

Those days are long gone,
few memories remain,
but I’m jotting them down
while I’m still sane.

I think as we age we all like to look back at fond memories and you have written a wonderful, nostalgic look back at your childhood that brings a smile to my face. Very well done, Dick. Really enjoyed this!

Nicely written way to keep your memories alive. Be sure to make a 'new' memory every day too.

The Libra Solution: Shedding Excess and Redefining Success by Lisa DAnnolfo Levey

The familiar lament of dual-career parents raising children is, "I just can't do it all." The Libra Solution provides an alternative - a more satisfying and sustainable work and life approach - to the overwrought modern day norm.
