BIG SISTER
At 13 she was a live-in-nanny,
though she didn’t get a lot of pay.
Her working life had started early,
she was already making her way,
She needed to get out of the house,
just too many mouths to feed.
She was helping support the family,
of necessity, rather than greed.
I don’t remember her around the house,
she’d moved out when I was young.
By sixteen she was already married,
her life hadn’t been lots of fun.
I remember her teaching me things,
like how to tell my left from right.
And later, after she had married,
sometimes I’d spend the night.
Years later we vacationed together,
she taught me about “sheets and lines.”
We visited “Angle Park”
then discussed it dozens of times.
There’s a story behind that verse
a memory for she and I,
we always joke about it
can’t seem to let is slide.
We discussed raising kids
and the challenges it presents
as we cooked over an open fire
and spent the night in tents.
She’s always been my hero
along with her guy Jack.
I’ve learned about life
because they taught me the knack.
She’s always been my big sister,
but even more, she’s been my friend.
I’ll always cherish our relationship
until we both have met our end.
We’ve always been very close,
though the miles have kept us apart,
it seems she’s always been right here,
at home within my heart.
