When she was five ..
She went out to play
She lived on a horseshoe
shaped road
called Carey Lane..
in a small town ..
where everyone was safe
because everyone knew
everyone's name..
or so they thought..
small town people
I think not..
If not their names..
they knew their type..
the drinker..
the wife beater..
the thieves in the night..
but she was just a kid..
who only wanted to watch
the traffic go by
at the end her
horseshoe shaped road..
something she always
loved to do..
She watched every car
looked for kids her age..
She wondered
what their lives were like..
If they were the same..
If they had to hide like her..
She wondered
if they were wanted..
She pretended
she was in their car..
Going someplace
safe
Someplace
very far....
Only five...
but oh so wise..
and oh so needy...
that was her downfall.
this little girl..
who defended all..
even at her young age..
She knew of
Heartache.
Frustration.
Damnation
and rage
On this particular day..
She remembered a few cars..
then things got kind of blurry..
She thought
maybe she was dead..
She woke up
in a strangers house..
this strange man by her side..
Her stomach hurt so much..
she only wanted to cry..
Ohh God..
How long had she been gone..
Her Mommy was going to be
mad as hell..
She tried to tell the man..
but he didn't seem to care..
Things were so blurry
She is on a big bed..
with a soft white
chenille spread..
She was scared
but knew to stay quiet
feeling very sick..
He told her not to be afraid
that he was all done..
All done ..
with what she wondered..
Then she asked him for her cloths..
Feeling funny
in only her mint green undies..
now stained with red..
Again she thought
her Mom was going to be mad
She thought she must be dying.
here in this strange mans bed..
The man looked really funny..
he was naked and looked gross..
She tried to keep her eyes closed..
but it only made her spin..
So she did the only thing she could just stared at the ceiling..
all the while listening to him...
He finally let her get dressed..
her legs burned
her body ached....
but she had had worse
so she sought no escape..
The man took her little hand
and led her to his kitchen..
Everything was white and clean..
walls refrigerator and floor..
No color in this room..
no color at all..
Except for a bowl
of Peanut butter cups..
he kept on his counter top..
Next thing she remembers..
She is back on Carey Lane..
back in her room
with a melted peanut butter cup
in her sweaty hand..
People were all around her..
asking who and where..
She didn't know what to tell them
so she just laid in bed
let her mind go blank..
The last one to leave her room..
was her mother..
The little girl asked..
can I keep my candy bar..
and with this question
the mother laughed.
You mine as well keep it..
You earned it somehow..
So she ate the peanut butter cup..
because she needed something
anything good
but it only made her
feel sicker than before..
She has never eaten another.
not to this day..
Peanut butter cups
bring back memories
She would rather keep at bay..
She cried herself
to sleep that night..
feeling the pain from his abuse..
Wondering ..
why she must suffer..
Wondering
what was the use..
she was just a girl..
One thing she did understand...
she had absolute no control..
as she suffered at others hands
The next day
her Auntie came to her..
She took her out of town..
She nursed the cuts on her legs..
but all the nursing.
the salves..
the ice
in this world..
was not going to bring back
this little girl
She no longer played..
she never said a word..
she hid from all who came..
brothers
sisters
family
friends
she hid from all of them
under tables..
under chairs..
It was not a game..
She hid herself
because she felt to blame..
She definitely
lost something..
that day on Carey Lane.
Something
she never
got back again.
If I could take the pain and memories away and give your "child" peace I would do it in a heartbeat. However, I can only offer you my ears to listen, my eyes to watch words, my shoulder to cry on, and my soul to mourn. Execellent write. Such truth and honesty in this works.
