Rat infested trenches
Farmyard fences
Intrepid fields
Unfriendly skies
Blast of death
In autumnal soft glare
Whizzing through decaying
Blood-stained air
Kill their neighbour.
We kill time.
Lie for cover
We lie under a cover
Shoot the enemy down with ease
We shoot the breeze
The ultimate price paid
No payment required
Agony, blown away

Powerful, Andy. Truly gut-wrenching. I believe that your forays into bringing us the life and death of your uncle will probably produce your very best work. So visual and presenting the contrasting and contrapuntal states of being in a voice devoid of emotion (almost) makes it all the more piercing. Timely and yet timeless. xx
strange how i was just looking some poems of over a distant relative who fought in WW1 ... he was German and a doctor ... i believe he was lieutenant colonel ... very well written, Andy ...
