She was raped. she could be pregnant or infected with HIV and worse still, justice has not been carried out to punish the culprits. Instead they have forced the victim to flee her country. Strange!
This is what millions of Somali girls back home undergo on timely basis. It was matter of coincidence that I saw the picture of Fatuma in the internet with a short story describing her plight and I was then moved to write this piece story/poetry.

With rifles swung down their shoulders
They started marauding like poachers
Searching not for game but for girls
Till their drug-high eyes turned blood
On their lookout for a soft victim
They have spotted on an innocent soul
Fatuma has fallen prey to the beasts
The beautiful teenage girl was raped
With the absence of justice in Somalia
The gang went away with it unpunished
Fatuma drowned in the tears of her pain
As her heart is filled with tons of misery
A perilous sea journey became her option
wading into the sea to escape horror
Fatuma ended up in a Yemeni refugee camp
She gazes into the depths of emptiness
Alone in the desert she weeps in alone
A little sympathy can inject some hope
But only justice can heal the wounds
Oh Lord may justice smile upon her one
day
May the winds of injustice cease blowing
Before celebrating her 20th birthday
Fatuma has experienced a triple pain
One was inflicted upon her by rapists
The other by the lack of fair justice
And now by the strings of hard times
Fatuma deserves help
Would anybody come to her rescue?

This one pulls on the heart-strings. I'm not sure those type of wounds ever heal, regardless of justice. However, justice would help her move on and perhaps feel more secure. Some countries will still cut a hand off for stealing. This is a type of stealing. Tell me, what should be cut off in this case? Very stirring poem! A topic I am most passionate about.
