The Famine in Somalia is the product of a number of negative factors that contributed to the present situation of mass starvation and death. Among them are the endless wars in the country, lack of a functioanl state structure that has the capacity of delivering services to its public, Islamic Militia of Alshabaab who deny people access to humanitarian aid, terrorism, piracy in the seas, collapsed institutional set up, global complacency, neglect and indifference, shortage of rains and seasonal failures etc. If these underlying causes of the present famine are not adequately addressed and solved, the cycle of horror will continue recurring on timely basis and that can lead to the disappearance of Somalis from the face of the earth. According to my shallow estimates, almost every Somali family on the average has today a history of losing several of its members to war and famine over the past two decades. If this trend maintains momentum, then we will have a loss of generations over the century. Therefore while focusing on emergency relief interventions, we need to also come up with viable solutions to prevent future catastrophes. But for now we must focus the reality on the ground: Losing a child in every 10 minutes in Somalia and receiving 1300 refugees in Dadaab camp on daily basis.
