Poem Artwork

When I was young
life to me
was a mystery;
it was made
of the wind.
To me, it was
as complex
as the streaks
of light
on the forehead
of the night.

Confused and dazed,
I often used to
watch the sky
continuously,
on and on,
hoping to unleash
the threads of life
from the perpetuity
of the naked sky.

“What are you doing,
my son? Don’t you have
anything better to do? Stop
gazing at the sky all day long?”
My mother used to carp.

“I am searching,
the meaning of life, mother.
I am not looking at the sky.
I am trying to erase
the clouds,
line by line,
and see, if God
has left some clues
about the mystery of life
beneath the cloud’s veil for me,”
used to be my reply.

Ah! Now I am old,
and the curiosity
within me has died.
But they say,
it is as it was then.
hiding beneath
the masks of the dead
secretly watching
the stars summing up
the zeros in the emptiness.

Now, my friend!
After all these years,
I have come
to understand
that life is nothing.
Yes, it is nothing
but a composed series
of coincidences, and
how we react to these
– is everything.
Our reaction determines
who we are- we are the key.

How foolish I was
to seek the meaning of life
-on the corridors of the sky.

The sky is nothing.
I have seen the sky
crying in my dreams.
The sky is empty.
I have heard the sky
begging in my dreams.

excellent analogy and metaphor that inspires the mind to probe the meaning of life as the soul attempts to capture its significance ...

You are a deep, insightful thinker, my friend. This reflective poem inspires. For example, to reply to your mother with such metaphoric words and at such a young age speaks of an individual born with an exceptional intuition. It is a joy to discover that humanity possesses individuals of such character - even if you may say that we are coincidences. On this point, there is indeed nothing new under the sun where life is concerned. We all swim around in a shared vernacular pool of varying depths, and are arguably born into an already prepared screenplay and script.
I don't know about life being nothing - fair enough if you compare it to the emptiness of a blue sky - it certainly is perpetually infused with conflicts and tensions that help shape who we are.
On this note, the full meaning of life is yet to be revealed, at least the reason why we as individuals were born in the first place.

A stimulating poem, my friend.

Regards
Dai

ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL POEMS I HAVE EVER READ... for me, right now. Bhuwan, this is IMMENSE. But far from the truth, I hope. Such soulfulness can NEVER EVER quit asking the questions or maintaining the journey. Yet your words are those of the accomplished wordsmith and the searching intellectual. I'm in awe. The paradox for me is that I can soooooooooooooo value and relate to the searching, and yet, for myself, have had my questing and questions answered. I treasure this write. You seem totally unaware of the power in your pen. Be well and blessed under a beneficient sky. LOL K xx

Interesting write, Bhuwan, which makes me think. Is everything nothing, or is nothing everything? And therefore, do we have the key to nothing, or everything? Each must seek and find on their own, for themselves. Excellent!! I enjoyed it immensely.

Peace. Joyce

I too stare at the sky and daydream and I too search for answers in silent places.About your second last verse,I don't think you were foolish Bhuwan, the sky is as good a place as any other to ponder on such a deep puzzle....the meaning of life?I agree with you that each are the key and the answer is within us to find.
Profound thought and debth in your well written poetry.
