Night comes to the city along with the rain
Dampness invading every pore and vein
Cars cruise by their headlights reflected
Into infinity on roads long since neglected
Street lights casting their pools of light
Forming tiny worlds in a universe of night
Hundreds of shop signs barking their wares
Taxicabs patrolling searching for fares
Across the wet street the partygoers cheer
Laugh, cry, shout, celebrating with beer
The war is now over the killing is done
The world rejoices it’s time for some fun
I have seen too much in my twenty years
Fallen broken cities death and many tears
I fought the enemy and took my share of lives
Orphaned many children widowed many wives
Now it’s home I revisit native soil under feet
My body sore-tired my poor soul all but beat
The third floor window all bright and calling
Makes me wonder as the rain keeps falling
Is there anything left? Can I get back my life?
How has the world’s troubles affected my wife?
Is my child happy? How much has she grown?
Will she call me dad, a man she’s never known?
There is only one way to know for certain
Walk up the stairs and through the curtain
Leave the world outside just for tonight
I have returned home with brand new sight
