Across the sea to England
Mother Ireland will birth her novel in London,
go to parties and be seen by
everyone who reads Joyce and Kafka.
Not stuck in the bogs of Meath
With people looking downward and inward,
Mother Mary and Jesus!
Once again, the bog appears in her life
(She’s reading Seamus Heaney)
That ancient call of Tara, sinking its spade
into her heart.
