The gate is unbolted; step inside
Villa Puccini,
into the Maestro’s little gardens
Kleine Gärten, in German —
Doria and Cori, Corinna,
flowers that bloomed for but a brief time
in Puccini’s garden of love.
A bee may flit from flower to flower,
but what of an opera composer?
A statue of Giacomo Puccini stands
in the villa’s gardens,
looking out over the beloved seasonal blooms;
the trees, the shrubs, and the flowers
are poetry: showing, not telling.
But a lingering remorse—one that cannot
be erased in a hundred years—
sometimes envelops the villa
like the strings of an orchestra’s violins;
on evenings when the clouds
obscure the Florentine sun,
Puccini’s statue sheds a tear
Perhaps it is the work of faith,
miracles are only for Lourdes,
it is surely a trick of the light.
And yet, there is always a tenor
in the midst of a masterful bravura performance,
somewhere in the world,
declaring his love for Floria, or Tosca:
this is the lasting emotional legacy
of Puccini.
I PICCOLI GIARDINI DI PUCCINI
Il cancello è scostato; entra
a Villa Puccini,
nei piccoli giardini del Maestro
— *Kleine Gärten*, in tedesco —
Doria e Cori, Corinna,
affacciata sulle amate fioriture stagionali;
gli alberi, gli arbusti e i fiori
sono poesia: mostrano, non raccontano.
Ma un rimorso persistente — che non può
essere cancellato in cento anni —
a volte avvolge la villa
come le corde dei violini di un’orchestra;
