118 Praise God From Whom...

The picture is me in my Mennonite "plain suit."

Poem Artwork

Mennonites in a Pile

You’re not that honest

But you made it through the deal

And as the cards kept falling

Someone’s death was sealed

Open book on the table

Was new number 118

The old 606 flowed forward

Your bleeding heart full of greed

Sing baby! Sing! Sing loud and hard!

Truth eluded dark souls tonight

Cursed your silver tongue and golden words

You quietly made the deal, slipped out of sight

Praise God From Whom

118 in the blue hymnal

606 in the red hymnal

I am familiar with "Praise God..." but based on my past experience in churchiness, it appears as if there's feuding in the vestibule. Good writing Dayvid, as it always is.
Cheers,
Dan

'Looks like I'm going to have to read up on the Mennonites. I live in Northern Ohio and we have the Amish here in Middlefield. Oh, I love that hymn, "Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow" by the way.

Love ya!

"Worship wars," a series of debates on genre or style, most broadly between "hymns" and "praise music" asks "How do we preserve our identity, and stay relevant from a rural grain farming setting to the "Menno-nots?" Mennonite music scholars in the debate of where Mennonite music studies need to go, and those people that are disenfranchised by the Mennonite church who have a Mennonite identity, but don't know where to put it. The Mennonites outside the church and their creative music. Whatever lies between the color of the covers, Mennonite literature and poetry are symbolic identity. Just like any culture, ethnicity plays into the process, "We're more Mennonite than you" argument because "we do not sing choruses"...diversity of religiosity, Dayvid. Even your culture can't escape it...and mine The Powder River Hymnals? We'll both lose a few wayward souls along the way to greed.
