In Peace Her Baby Stirred

A mother sung her lullaby, beneath an ancient moon
Another sung in whispers, resting twixt the dunes
One sung in a forest thick, her babe against the breast
A wolf howled in the misty hills, while cubs curled in their rest

Across the sea, beneath the stars, in glow of tropic moon
In a hut of bamboo, another hummed her tune
In the coldest northern snows, with babe swaddled by fur
A mother sang her lullaby, in  peace her baby stirred

Before the words of logic, came comfort in the sounds
A warm vibration joining souls, to mother, infant bound
Before the speech, and knowledge, before the learning ways
The echoes sang a song of love, mere words could  never say

FANTASTIC!! There are frequencies, I'm sure, that are only picked up through that mother-child cord and the lining of the uterus. No medical understanding in this idea, but sounds highly plausible to me! When I was chronically sick with an aggressive immune system, I recognised the truth in the idea that sound waves stimulate or depress the activity of the auto-immune. Likewise all that pertains to growth and development, methinks. Your usual high-quality rhythm and rhyme that puts you in danger of having ALLLLLLLLLLLL of us climb into your lap, Mom!! :)) LOL Kate xx

Anita, this poem captures the intimate connection of mother and infant so perfectly!

This is a moving masterpiece of maternity!

The echoes sang a song of love, mere words could never say

And what a timeless song it is, the everlasting love between mother and child. A very lovely piece, Queenie.

So beautiful, and yes... so deeply stirring, that a tear wells up and then splashes upon a smile. "The echoes sang a song of love, mere words could never say"... and would never cease to be heard within.

When my son was hatched, and after the mess was cleared, as they were stitching her back up, I held my lad and it was weird, because he looked as if he had the answers too the universe...

It has been said that a newborn baby could pick out the voice of his mother from a room full of female voices - remarkable. This ability begins in the womb where the baby senses vibrations, shifts and sounds that stem from various parts of his mother's being (I think we'll skip the sound that comes from the bowel region, he could probably pick her out in this test too!).
Likewise with rhythm. John Lennon had observed that when black nurses held a newborn child at feeding time that they danced, whereas white nurses stood still. Maybe that explained Huggy Bear's bouncy strut, and Michael Jackson's moonwalk! Don't know about us Scots with our Highland Fling - maybe a stick of dynamite had been stuck up...well, you get the drift.

'The echoes sang a song of love, mere words could never say'

This sensation is the most important one for a babe to sense. To emerge not into a world of conflict, but into the tender and comforting arms of unconditional love.

In Peace Her Baby Stirred?

Indeed.

Yer oan the baw, hen, good oan ye!
