Sometimes gentle, sometimes capricious, sometimes awful, never the same for two months together; almost human in its passions, almost spiritual in its tenderness, almost Divine in its infinity.—Bayard Ruskin

 

LEARNING TO FLY

 

 
The villagers felt a rumble, when the sky opened
As a breath inhaled, pulling all small upward
Into a vacuum of moist, thread
Like a great basket on the rise
 
While those objects of greater weight
Fell through the open weave
To the duality of a questionable freedom, or doom
As  those who declined the gamble
Held fast with limb
To whatever solid was obtainable
 
The sky slowly exhaled, and the basket of moist lowered
It's weave relaxed, and the moist threads loosened
While those who held on, did so on a dangled swing
Lubricious and cool
Causing those stowaways to slip into the air
Tumbling in a dizzying decent
Until the next inhalation
 
Where through their brief experience
By previous seconds, of terror and exhilaration
Those on the toss
Twisted free
And soared

Your descriptions in the first verse awakened my senses. I've had dreams of flying (like most). I think you capture that awkward and clumsy feel just before the soar. I love the ending on this poem. It makes me feel freedom, as if anything is possible. Love and Hugs,
