My wife and I were high school sweethearts. We then lived separate lives until we were reunited. This poem is for her.

Poem Artwork

She came through the door
At half-past five,
Looking worn and tired,
Barely alive.

But this woman,
Is a beauty to me,
The love of my life,
In every degree.

We were together
When we were fifteen,
And again at forty,
But not in between.

She was a good girl,
And I was a rogue.
I looked out for myself,
And I was bound for the road.

Life has a way
Of humbling the naughty.
It can wear away charm
And bring down the haughty.

Only after
I had been tempered by fire,
Did the Lord allow me
My heart's greatest desire.

And now, my friends,
In middle age,
With a soul that's caring,
And no longer enraged,
I have found my way home.

A gentle spirit
Is what I have earned.
I have been broken and mended,
And on the road I have learned
The meaning of love.

And as I look at her now,
Worn and tired,
Hair gently graying,
But knowing she's desired,
By me,
My heart is finally filled.

Our youth
May have been squandered,
In the many years
That I tragically wandered,
But today the reward is finally ours.

I am grateful to God,
That we are together,
That we've settled down,
To live our forever,
Which is now,
And well worth the wait.

Nicely crafted poem, and what a beautiful message! All wishes come true, very often too late... this time just about in time. Franz
