Night vigil is not regarded

As a punishment

But a compassionate,

Which means to reinvigorate

And awaken a student

Who may be tired

From intensive lectures,

Or who is under the stress

Of the so-called 'monkey mind'

Overwhelmed with erratic ideas.

The task of a clever teacher

Is to cut out directly the roots

Of such thoughts, all at once,

And this regards as the point

Of the so-called 'seal of mind.'

John has said it beautifully. Teaching can be a very frustrating job when the minds of students are closed to creative thinking. Strangely, it's the same students that spend nightly vigils, night after night, drinking spirits at the local bar and staggering home without a thought in their head except to fall asleep. To rise on the new day with a foggy mind, unwilling to learn.

As a teacher now for nearly 50 years, let me say this: easier said than done. I have met many monkey minds in my time, and continue to deal with them to this day. What a fate. I think I need my own "night vigil" to seal my own mind. John
