After my wife and I retired from teaching, we took a trip out West. One of the places we visited was Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. In my opinion, its beauty surpasses the one called "Grand," all because of its many multi-colored rock formations called “hoodoos.”
Bryce
It was early September, and The air was cold enough to see my breath. A cousin had already told me about you— Had told me of your splendid beauty. So, I wanted to see for myself. On the morning I was to cast my eyes upon you For the very first time, The combined chill and drizzling rain Could not dampen my spirit. But I was not fully prepared For what my eyes were to behold. From the first vantage point, I witnessed the breadth and depth Of your amphitheater’s awesomeness. Your hoodoos, formed from centuries of erosion, Stood like military brigades, awaiting inspection. Proud to display your many-colored totems of Orange Yellow Pink
Gold
Red
Mauve White And more, Each column’s layered hues were greatly enhanced By the constant penetration of that early morning drizzle. But I had to laugh when I spotted a plaque That simply repeated something Ebenezer had said many years before: “It's a helluva place to lose a cow.”
SO DESCRIPTIVE AND SO ENJOYED. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT A THRILL IT WOULD BE TO ACTUALLY SEE IT WITH ONE'S OWN EYES! I SAY THIS BECAUSE THE PICTURE LOOKS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS...ALMOST UNREAL! GOD'S 'NATURAL GIFTS' TO US CAN ALMOST MAKE US 'PANT' TO SEE THE NEW HEAVEN AND EARTH WHERE EVERYTHING WE NOW SEE...WILL BE ENHANCED! THANKS FOR SHARING, DAVID. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH..JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
I've been to Utah several times and visited briefly Canyonlands and Natural Bridge National Parks, but never got to Bryce. From your poem, I believe that I missed something special and should try to get back there someday.
By the way, inserting the humorous plaque into the poem top it off nicely! ;-)
