All this slipped by our consciousness during the past twenty years. Chinese manufacturers not only pay young people who come from the provinces less, they also do not have any regulations controlling safety and working conditions. If they have any costly regulations, these are easily changed by greasing the palms of the Communist elite to look the other way.
Why our altruistic captains of industry would do this is simply as you stated, greed. There is very little altruism in large corporations.
Delight in the end of the tunnel is that they are buying from us. For the growing middle class, American goods are prized. For example, Chinese love Buicks (perhaps because Tiger Woods was promoting them) and that is one reason why General Motors retained Buick while it dropped the Pontiac and Oldsmobile lines.
The Chinese are also trying to get back all the artifacts that were taken out of the country in the past. So if you have a Ming Dynasty trinket lying around, some Chinese billionaire wants to make you rich, too. ;-)
