A tribute to a Mozambican baby boy. To wear, he had nothing but a hand-me-down amber coloured dress that used to belong to a little girl, when I held him in my lap, many years ago. Also a tribute to all the Mozambican children; those who became and will become men and women, and those who never did and never will.

Painting by Roberto Chichorro, a Mozambican artist.

Amber Dresses

From my lap rises, balmy, your scent of mango
of mango still green, yet open in eyes of tenderness
and ripe wonder, of the same amber hue as that little dress
of the white little girl who grew up and went away
far, far away from where you, sweet baby boy, melt caresses
of sepia upon my devotion to the man you will become.
Will you? Doubt is that saline haze in suspension
over this tide of hope flooding in my eyes
that hail, in waves, the smooth dawning of your pure smile.
Baby boy… I want you to grow out of that little dress
and into the full vastness perceptible within the delivery
of your dream. You whisper infinite shores to the shell of this fear
and awaken as a man
whole
when, lulled by the faith that you kindle on my lap
we both fall asleep, dressed only of amber tomorrows
in Xai-Xai.
Nacoranza…

Amber is a favorite color of mine along with yellow. So sunshiney and brightening and faith brightens our lives too. So glad I read this early this morning. It says lots to me.

What a sweet remembrance and soul-touching tribute.
When our soul is touched by another soul, our life
is changed forever and we realize how much a part
of one another we truly are. And love remains
forever in our hearts.

Amo te muito, meu Anjo ...

Wonderful poem to describe the painting! I like how this painting had inspired you to write. It fits the both the painting and the title of the poem so well. well-done, Alexandra!
