I wrote this poem in Portuguese, back in 2006.
Here is the translation, now – hoping you may enjoy it!
– Love, Alexandra*

Catharsis

When it becomes writing, it is no longer catharsis.

The process is one of synonyms flowing
in a natural sequence.

Flowing over the skin, often as flat as olive oil
of that kind with which some define the sea
when it is so indefinably flat, that they find it
- with depth - at the surface of what does not
blend.

Flowing within the veins, in a painless purification
of the blood that escapes from subtle wounds
of obvious expiations, admitted with all
the scarlet astuteness of a paint used to depict
roses, thorns, and juice of ground pomegranates
in living portraits, so that they may be seen, should
someone prefer to, as still-lives surging along
a wall.

Or flowing across some piece of paper, and then
oozing with the sick yellow tinge of a soul
that purges itself until the next synonym becomes
one of a depurated sun in an uncontaminated air
that surges upon the lips where the yellow may
alternately turn into the pale, apprehensive hue
of a smile, or the amber sweetness of some
furtive honey.

Flowing like tears gathered in hands cupped
like seashells that refuse to season, with the salt
of clichés, those glances lost in bland fallacies
of shores where the sand is sand and period
- brushed from the feet as one goes away.

Flowing, precisely, like going away, in a
process – absolutely natural – that is
synonym of catharsis, and thus, of arriving
to total cleansing – thus, to everything, thus
to nothing.

Thus, when it becomes writing… it no longer
is.

I agree with several others commenting here, but I just can't imagine it would lose anything in translation, not with you doing the translating. This is outstanding. I enjoyed it not only for its manifest poetic beauty but also for its message. You did a great capture here. Catharsis is in the creativity. It's a bonus if others can enjoy it.

Xandinha, Artista Bonita ...

I have recently felt this "Catharsis". It was when Estella died. I had to purify my emotions and I did so by writing a poem about her. Then the tears flowed and I have since discarded the poem as if it never existed. Afterall, it had served its purpose.

You've penned another masterpiece here, meu Amor. One to which so many can relate.

In deep admiration,
Teu Joseph

My dearest Alexandra ...

To bestow upon thee poet extraordinaire would be an injustice. You not only write exquisitely with words, you paint the mysteries of life (hidden to most) with words; those colorful insights of a soul blessed with acute sensory perception.

Or in the words of my son: "Sheeshka la beeshka, your bomb brains fulla rose petals dude." (-:

Your sense modality is a rare gift Alexandra - as is experienced in many of your creations - and always gives me the distinct impression of having been immersed in a well of the purest honey.

Never rest your quill poet ...

W O W, Alexandra, a powerfully meaningful verse that poets will identify with: I know I do. Beautifully expressed and presented!

This poem is like a good warm snake that slither over each inch of our subconscious, "flowing" as it does, like a river made of thoughs to wash away the fears.
Very, very well done, with shadows of saudades.

I bet this was a better poem in Portuguese. I cannot speak that language but I know well Italian and know the difference in resonance when writing in such Latin languages. I love English and I find it a good medium for expression but I also know the melodious Latin languages compared to the German. It is also funny how in Malta we too compare the calm sea to oil. As a poem this is another great one from you. The visions it evokes and the great imagery are a joy to read. Victor
