Poem Artwork

Back seat smooching steaming up
windows in a 1950 Chevy with
"Imitation of Life" on the big
screen Friday date night at the
Bellevue Drive In after leaving
our South Side High School
football game win against our
rival Central High for such were
those vibrant days of our youth
never to grow old and frail

Sometimes his Daddy's borrowed
1947 red Ford pickup truck
straight from the Friday fish
market day in the bed a load
of frozen fish to Saturday peddle,
but to never mind we went home
before a chance of melting came
packed in dry ice

On special occasions we got his
Mother's 1953 green and yellow
Buick Special...perhaps "Giant"
was playing on the screen that
very
night

We were the rebels of the
fifties "with a cause" for having
fun at our favorite hang out
eating a Leonard's barbeque and
bean pot on any given weekend as
those were the days, my friend...
to laugh and play into great things
yet to come

My Friend

~Special Acknowledgement to~
The music of Charles Strouse
that has touched the life of
almost every American in the
last half century. His song
"Those Were the Days"
launched over 200 episodes of
All in the Family and continues
to reach new generations of
television audiences in syndication.

~Accolades also belong to~
Mary Hopkin for her rendition
of the song that became very
popular here in the US. This
song is originally a russian song,
and the English lyrics were
wrote by Gene Raskin.

Yes, they sure were. I often refer to that phrase in my writing. The mind plays tricks on us and we tend to remember the best. I too, have forgotten the angst and depressing times during those years in favor of what was really rosy about them.

Your delightful poem of drive-in's and steamy windows brought back such nostalgic, fun memories! I enjoyed the trip down "memory lane" and sincerely wish life could once again be so carefree and simple.

Those were the days, for sure. we hoped they'd never end; but they did sadly. I remember, in the 70s, when there were still a few drive-ins around, being told that they were for kids.
This is a well observed and evocative little poem

Although I was born in 1954 I still think of the fifties as "my ëra" with four older sisters and one older brother I grew up on the music and memories of those wonderful times.

Vivian,
I loved this, it is too bad they are gone except where someone is using them for flea markets now.

That drive-in back seat worked well into the 60's too. Speakers hung in the driver's side window if you got there early. Sneakin' in friends in the trunk. The mosquito squad passing through with the foggers, about half choked ya. Good times. Patrick

Yes, I was there with you being a rebel. I fear I am still a rebel, my "cause" is still in limbo, and will likely be so until I breathe my last breath. Drive-in's put a lot of shady motels out of business. Who wanted to pay their price when the drive-in's were cheap and .. . er . . . semi-private. Brought back some memories here, Vivian. Thanks.

My mom says ‘If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything’. Sorry mom but under the guise of poetic license I penned these beauties.
