Coming of Age

Ways of the world
can be ambiguous
growth of blinded
innocence seeing
only roses and
butterflies from
idealistic dreams

Bringing a smile
into view of the
world colored
by your desires
assuming that
things are as
you see them

Food for inspiration
yet not the absolute
truth as your reality
depends on whatever
is in your imagination
to make it happen
enjoying the reverie

I am very appreciative of your version of 'we create our own reality'....your words: "truth as your reality/depends on whatever/is in your imagination/to make it happen." Wonderful! ~~ Diana

That phrase "blinded innocence" is pretty thought provoking. Blinded is a harsh word in the context but on reflection it fits really well; after all it's our brutal world that blinds our children's innocence and the innocent children are the lucky ones. We adults are the ones that made the mess.

How so true, especially for children.

I sense we protect our children too much from all the media and Internet hype. To me coming of age means gaining responsibility and the only way to gain responsibility is to have had to face the down and dirty side of life on our own without someone holding our hand continuously until we are unable to be brave and face the future with determination.

Childhood is for play, and we should allow play to happen for the values it teaches.

Those were times of beauty when in our world
of childhood things were innocent and beautiful.
I say let the children dream of all the beauty
they desire, all grow up too quickly to reality
as our world shows us now. Nothing at all wrong
with this as long as age appropriately in stages
of growth children can be also taught the dangers.

Wonderful write Vivian :)

Funny, I had my little Grandgirls over night soon to be age 5 and 3...Camryn the oldest (during bedtime hours) wished to ride a rainbow with unicorns, she asked me if it is real, wishes? I said, you can believe anything you can dream or wish..wow your poem is such a stong message..moving!

I like the optimistic tone with not a hint of the jaded perspectives that so often obscure that bright world our imaginations bode forth. Another splendid poem, dear Vivian.

Oh, to be young when everything has the sweet scent of flowers and the taste of delicious lollipops. When we get a little older reality sets in and at that point one has to make their own reality, finding their way step by step as you have shown in this oh, so true poem. Very clever writing!

AAaaahh, I remember back when...such a vivid imagination and even today I can envision, but have trouble making it happen, no reverie.

Enjoyed, Vivian!

Aye, but the disappointment comes when the "world colored by your desires" crumble and shatter by reality. Sad. But true.

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
