When I'm gone ...

Most folk who read my work know that my rhymes are classed under light verse and are usually amusing ditties. This one however is a little more serious. Now before you panic, I'm not dying or ill, it just crossed my mind that it's kind-of going to be extremely weird not to be here when my time is up, and this poem developed from that thought.

I'll really resent that life goes on when I’m not there,

I’ll want the world to mourn, not just by family or a friend

the deepest sorrow thus to share

when my life on this earth comes to an end

I want everything to mark this tragedy,

and cease, for one that meant so much

To mark the ending of this life, that’s me

Who passed and is now completely out of touch

It must be strange to not be around

No longer a part of everyone’s normal day

For me to change, from being, to no longer sight or sound

Just in the heart a memory, like on a loop, would play

It’s just a thought that crossed my mind

So often of those that went before

Those we’ve previously lost, then of me, I find

the idea of not being here, distressing all the more

Yes, I want a day of mourning on my behalf

The whole nation moved to shed a tear

all flags at half-mast and while,

no longer flesh and blood but just a photograph

I want it remembered that I was here

The memory of me causing everyone, though sad, to smile...

And maybe even laugh.

And so you may be surprised if later you learned that you were more than a distant memory for many. Beautiful thoughts captured here in the poem, a thing we all feel. John

Nothing more motivating to do great work than this.

As an existentialist, I believe there is nothing after death except the work done during life. If you, are a writer of the quality of Pearl Buck, the world will mourn for you. So, I would say get busy like Michael Jackson or Maya Angelou, and get famous. ;-)

It's a great life,
if you don't let get you down,
so make the most out of it,
we won't always be around.
