Joy, what a moving tribute you've displayed to your father and
his service in WW2. As one who signed up for that war at age 17
and did his naval service in the Pacific, I am reminded today of
my shipmates, especially those we left behind. -gene.

In 1941, my father was turned away for his disabilities–a ruptured eardrum and myopia with astigmatism. However, my uncles served. If called, I was ready to serve during my college years. However, after being paralyzed in surgery, my draft board labeled me unable.

When we think of freedom, we must think of freedom for everyone. There are many in this world who are not free, and war will not free them. Nonviolence is a much more powerful way to gain freedom than war.

We have lost much of our freedom the past decade. I was recently not allowed to take a day cruise (I've done it before) to Grand Bahama Island because the two forms of evidence of my birth in the United States was denied. We can't isolate ourselves and call it freedom.

Indeed there is a mighty cost. My father fought in WW2 and we lost family in the wars.
Thanks for this, my father wants me to get his nave things down and pass on his war memories.

Profound truth in your words, Joy. Every time I meet a soldier in uniform I say "thank you"....with a warm smile. They always say "you're welcome"....'nuff said......I've had uncles who fought in wars and I know their emotional scars run deep...I am forever thankful to all of our brave men and women who stand between us and opression!

Seems we have given the wrong people the power to ignore those who serve and then belittle their sacrifices.

Thank you, Joy, for reminding us of the cost of freedom. Have you seen this? "Look, it's an all volunteer force," Obama complained. "Nobody made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice? It doesn't compute.." "I thought these were people who were proud to sacrifice for their country, "Obama continued "I wasn't asking for blood, just money. With the country facing the worst financial crisis in its history, I'd have thought that the patriotic thing to do would be to try to help reduce the nation's deficit.. I guess I underestimated the selfishness of some of my fellow Americans."

Unfortunately, Joy, far too many do not stop to think of the huge sacrifices that have been made to keep them free. What makes it worse is that so many also voted in a president who is slowly, but surely taking away our freedoms from within. God bless your father and his participation and survival of World War II. I had an uncle who was in the Bataan Death March. He came back home weighing ninety-seven pounds.
