Being 100% Finnish, I often think of my time there.

Poem Artwork

Blood of the Northlands
Runs through my veins
Santa and reindeer
Bells on the reins

So tall the elk that
Roam with the bear
Northern lights dancing
High in the air

Bear's name so holy
Not called by name
Describe fur only
"Karhu" one and the same

Saturday sauna
Religious rite
Roll in snow after
Such a delight

The holy mountain
In pure Lapland
Runes being read by
Shaman's old hand

Mid-summer holds such
Celebration
Bon fires around the
Entire nation

"Rauha" is wished for
Most precious word
Then comes the call of
The cuckoo bird

Long are the winters
Still the Finns swim
Hole in the ice cut
Candles on rim

Magical "Suomi"
Birch trees and love
Formed by the gods who
Live high above

A magical write,
of a Northlands wish.
It left me yearning for more,
when it came to a Finnish.

Magical. Simply magical.

I've got a little bit of Finn in me, but I'm basically a mongrel.

Wonderful stuff of poetry. Looks like I will have to pack my bags. This is one place that I haven't been to but always wanted to go. Judging from your sublime descriptions and perfect rhyme, I would have a lot to wax eloquent about. Enjoyed this very much. John

I love this Jane...I can see those magnificent Northern Lights presiding over everything you describe...a magical land...
I also sense a keen sense of nostalgia...for me too, for as you know my family is from Scandanavia...
Great work....

Jerry, in his comment, expresses how I felt also, reading this historic gem. Great poetry.

You have extended your 100% Northlands blood through your words with this nifty, and educational piece of poetry, Jane. I found myself feeling the icy chill as I watched as the Finns took a winter's bath through that hole in the ice. Excellent poetry, my friend.
