ED KOSTRO, where are you when I need you...?

Poem Artwork

I’ve never much liked the woods,

As a Boy Scout I wanted to stay in a motel,

Most here in the campground, not I, have a fire ring,

So at night when its warm they can sit out & sing…

I do have to take Rufuz for an every nightly walk,

That doesn’t say I enjoy it, but to him I can talk,

I carry a super bright flashlight normally,

And every so often a walking stick that might,

Be some semblance of protection, nominally…

I don’t & won’t own a gun,

And I don’t mind the woods in the sun,

But this night, just less than an hour ago,

Rufuz did growl & bark, which he doesn’t usually do,

And in my beam from the light, a largish animal,

With eyes like a dogs, but much bigger, did parallel our path…

I wouldn’t want to see it hurt, but rocks I threw because,

He was getting closer to our path, on the other side of small creek,

I have this Rambo-ish style knife thing that from now on I will carry,

And better yet, in the back woods behind the campground,

I will never again in the dark of night tarry…

There is much beauty and fun in the woods but when it is dark, one must stay away as otherwise a danger might meet him somewhere probably at a most inopportune time. Thanks for this wónderful poem of fear and wisdom. George guided me to this and I enjoyed reading it so much

Oooohhhhh!!!!! This one is scary!!!!! You'll never know what it was that haunts you both. Perhaps, Rufuz knew it wasn't a friendly being. You were wise to think that you would not walk in the dark again.

I hope it wasn't a predator for there are a lot of other wildlife out there that in the dark of night and shadows can be pretty frightening when not expected for example a deer in the dark and behind bushes head on with eyes aglow from your flashlight can defiately give one a start. If you walk that way in the day you should look around the ground for tracks of animals...the size alone will give you a hint.

Dear lil'brother, we don't want you to get hurt, so, next time you venture in the dark, carry a pair of cymbals and make the hell of a racked, if the monsters don't go away, at least will be too entertained to be mean to you.

Ed,

Sounds like you may have had a brush with a nasty animal. Thank goodness Rufuz warned you. Things do go "bump" in the night.

If it was bigger than Rufuz, it was most likely a black bear, Bro. I've encountered black bears, coyotes, and even a few timber wolves in the wood, but the only critter I hope I never encounter in the woods is a cougar. The big cat predators are by far, the most dangerous, especially if hungry, or hurt.

I predicted some time ago that unless we stop killing off their natural prey, and stop destroying all their natural habitat, one day soon there's gonna be another war - man against remaining predators - and in many cases, man ain't gonna fare very well.

They've already spotted several pairs of cougars around the Great Lakes, and I, for one, hope I never run into them. Be very careful out there.
