The actuaries run their numbers and they decide whether they can make money or not. With medical costs rising faster than the economy, it is easy to get caught without insurance and with no way to get it except as you allude to, state supported insurance with all of the hoops you have to jump through to get it.

I fully agree with one thing that Obamacare tried to instill. We all need insurance, medical insurance from the day of our birth, poor or not. Starting early with a medical or life insurance policy would gain everyone much more than they ever expected.

But we are shortsighted when we are young and unless we have a company getting insurance for us, we have none. So when we get older, insurance suddenly becomes important. But it's too late, our medical bills determine what we have to pay for medical insurance.

But rest assured, once you reach 65 and qualify for Medicare, things get easier if more bureaucratic. Hang in there until you get to 65 and then sign up under MyMedicare.gov three months early and you'll be on your way to smoother sailing.

Ed, I feel for you. I've been of "dumb luck" all my adult life to have stumbled early into the 'insurance" trap, and now... thank doG, I'm of modest care due to the health and life insurance, and of course, the care my company affords me after a fourth career with Blackstone Publishing. 15 years of modest building of a 401K gives me solace.
