A poem to be published in my new book Dancers of The Mind

 After The Night

If there's an answer in the clouds I don't know it
Where the spectres fly with the magical ones
Where there are powers at work we can't see.

Down scrabbling amonsgt the dirt, I don't know what I am
I bear the marks of the slavemaster's whip upon my back
And the searing brand upon my soul,
But I was always too much of a lone wolf for that road
Introspection leads to freedom,
I am free, will act free, seek only to remain a spirit wandering
Where I choose to walk

Shifting patterns, colours phasing from one to another
I am like a rainbow, each shade merging with another
I am like a bad dream some days
The scenes merging, being lost under a coverance of foreboding
And what did you fear when you awoke in the morning ?
Do I ever know what I fear ?

Casts eyes towards the horizon -
Somehow I am often doing this, looking at the distance
What do I expect to see ? Some kind of miracle
Rising out of the cityscape perhaps
Or a mushroom cloud blooming to annihilate
That I think of as existence ?

Resting my weary head upon my arms I lie back in the darkness
Somehow a tear trickles from my twitching eye
The moon shines above, casting silvery light through the void
But which is the more powerful -
The blackness which is everything else
Or the single light that breaks through its bounds ?
Maybe one balances the other...

Sinking into sleep, becoming one with the shadowy deep
Ruminating on pathways I never see the end of
Somehow I always plunge off their edge in the darkness
Somehow I manage to become a thorn in people's sides
Somehow I never keep my companions on this journey
Somehow become a voice alone in my wilderness
Yet I still move on along
