In honor of Challenger and Colombia...both lost with seven aboard each flight.
The mysteries of heaven
call to us now and then
and for a select seven
it called once again...
Mounted on wings of silver
like an arrow of fire they rose
To the blue, to the darkness, to the heavens
Where no man really knows...
What lies beyond the starry fields
and ancient orbs that spin...
But something that entices man
again, again, again...
Their eyes planted at the stars
Our hearts seeking adventure with each
Coming back in a blaze of glory
As heroes with a lesson to teach...
That the fearless and the brave
Stands heads above us all
And only the good die young
But never give up dreaming
Is the song to be sung.
As for those brave heroes, those lost heroes we admire
Let us not forget the seven
Who reached for a tiny star
And caught a little bit of heaven.
excellent tribute ... and lets not forget Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee who died of asphyxiation, on AS 204 launchpad and all the astronauts who perished on test flights in jets ...

I have not forgotten and I have tac pins of both shuttles on my hat. I love the space program it is for those who dream beyond the realms of earth.
I remember both the Challenger and the Columbia disasters...I've seen a lot of history in the making, you know that? My first memory is of the Kennedy assassination, I was four years old. I remember Camille. Man walking on the moon. Martin Luther King getting shot. Robert Kennedy. The 60s, man! The terrible tornado outbreak of 1974. Earthquakes and other natural disasters through the years. (I went through the Blizzard of '78 and Ohio's worst flooding in 1969.) Oklahoma City bombing. The WTC bombing in 93. (Was it '93?) 9-11. And the latest disaster, the tsunami. GAD. Suddenly, I feel very old, indeed...and I'm only 45. I remember watching the Challenger on TV and when it exploded...I knew something wasn't right by the way the smoke patterns traced the sky. And I saw the Columbia disintegrate right overhead, in clear blue Texas skies. There was this straight line, the contrail--suddenly, it had like a "pouf" in it...and then it deviated into many hectic lines...I never heard anything, but my twin, who was asleep in bed three blocks north, heard a "boom."
Anyway, your poem is a touching, beautiful tribute to their memories--excellently penned and rhymed. They are missed. :(
