Hello! :)) Glad to report that I'm at last on the up... had my stitches out today and unpleasant surgical after-effects seem to be subsiding - though I DID have a very whacky "In Conversation With Michael Jackson" come to me whilst coughing the night away last Friday... not something for today though! Thanks for all your kindly thoughts and good wishes... BTW, if anyone has any ideas for a title for this, rather than its current rather clunky monstrosity, I'd be glad! re:Kuperatin Kate xx
MOUNT OF ASSUMPTION
We’d driven right
to the edge of the canyon,
to the tiny plateau known as
Dead Horse Point
where hundreds of mavericks,
once corralled, were left
and doomed to die,
collapsed above raging
Colorado waters, surging
two thousand feet below.
Steamy rain was falling,
bruising dusty red rock
into blemish of rouge,
into trickles of blood
trailing crimson and warm.
Rain and rock;
rustler, horse and river:
are these, then our Ancients?
Are down-laid pieces
of their sediment bone
borne now reformed
into upright, world-walking
postures of your spine?
As we here merge, my face
upturns to melt with mist,
liquid-kissed;
Kate _ Older Poem, but glad you are "KICKING STRONG"
A Lass like you, don't go down! YOU come up fighting!
This poem is sad! I read about their demise, I can't even fathom it (no pun intended) and this is where IT ALL HAPPENED!
MEMORIES that will never be forgotten for all them ill-fated Horses....YOU bring some life still to this poem and imagery is absolutely OUTSTANDING! A sense of REAL FREEDOM I feel here, Title of their Freedom would be nice, but this Title Is perfect to me, says what they had to endure! Kate, The word "MOUNT" is horses and steeped high, I will say no no more... YOU write GREAT! The Grand Canyon is Monumental in my eyes!
WRITE ON!
Blessings, Peace, Love and WARM Hugs, SHEExoooo
My dear recuperating Kate - I am so pleased for yo... tain't easy being ill !
In this write you, again, capture in miniature a view of America's history seldom discovered and appreciated by our citizenry. Thank you for this one. This is high quality writing, dear lady.
I am convinced that a book of your 'canyon and desert' poems would sell well in tis country and yours. With respect and truth. - Bill
we are the particles of earth and birth ... liquid, erect, granular ... our origins are ancient and embedded in the soil of our mind's deep canyons, constantly nursing the new born child within ...
Kuperatin Kate,
To me the title doesn't matter, yes there are many possibilities and some good suggestions already, but it's the writing that counts and this is wonderful.

Wonderful writing sweet Kate...stay safe and well..Hugsss
Awesome pen, Kate! I didn't know you had been sick, sorry to hear that, hope you're doing better... I know what it's like... the surgery and all... Please take care!
Magical realism at its best. The images (though deliciously incongruous) create a wonderful ambiance. You are on your way to write the next "One hundred years of solitude"
..merging with such beauty expands one to no end...as this never-ending setting....magical in scence and heart...I have a photo of the Grand Canyon as my screen saver..(still blows my mind)
title... Rocked at the Edge ???
"Dead Horse Point?" Or. . .how 'bout "Mavericks, All" -? Love the way you turned tragedy into "...liquic kissed,/becomes something life-giving,/rosy and wild." Wildly creatively, lovingly wrought! xOx 'Pea' xOx
Love the imagery in this...
I especially loved the last half of the poem. The first three stanzas set the stage with their somewhat harsh imagery and then left us to wander in our own reflections and somewhat softer images. All together leaving the reader with a sense of warmth in the end...
Good to know you're mending Kate!Love your descritions, you maintain the essence of the ancient environment, plus the inhabitants and wild life of the era...splendid poem!...ET
I have always had the greatest desire to visit and stand in amazement at the edge of the Grand Canyons and sadly I may never see that dream fulfilled but in your word and in your picture you took me there. I too was awestruck and a little saddened by the brutality of the old West but I also tasted the beauty of what you offered me. Thanks so much for sharing tears of wondermeant...

Wow Kate, that is some gorgeous photograph! Glad to hear you are on the mend and feeling better by the day. You have captured the wondrous essence in such a mesmerizing way....
I personally would never presume to imagine that a title I have for a poem is better than the one the poet picked...it is afterall yours and that says it all...I want to one day see the Grand Canyon and such too & glad to hear you are "on the mend"...ed & Rufuz
NATURE ALWAYS DOES THE JOB IT WAS CREATED TO DO; TOUCH, DEFUSE, INSPIRE, EXUDE. GREAT WRITE WITH GOOD IMAGERY. THANKS FOR THE SHARE AND GOD BLESS. JOYCE
I'm not too far from Telluride, Kate! I live a couple hundred miles away. I read about your visit. Mount of Assumption reveres ancient geography and the lay of the land, outlaws and their mounts. Even today, the annual wild mustang roundup is coming soon, a few new-born foals, too. This reminds me of my poem posted in my den, The Legend of Sam Storey about a horse who rescues a boat-load of canoers, only an old moonshiner believes it happened, and me, of course. Kick up some dust after your stitches heal, Kate...be well...
Fine poetry, Kate. Your words reach into my soul. I'd call it, "In Crimson Mist" but that's just me. I hope you continue to feel better and better. Love and best wishes to you,

Beautiful. One thought for the title might be:
Dead Horse Point
