More impressionism... it kinda does that to you! :)) xx

Poem Artwork

VENEZIAN PASTICHE

The mosaic composition

of fish-scaled memory

a calm window of sea

still can’t outshine.

Pasticcio’d salt and spray

just silt enough to live on.

A gilded lily-pad of faith’s

cantankerous weather and

pride’s rapturous vapours.

No trees, no roots – but routes:

arterial sluicings of acqua alta,

capillaries of mixed-blood lines.

Damp esplanades of parting

and misty wharves welcoming

feigned love, forced loss.

A 3D pop-up adrift beneath

urbane skies; Canaletto Mecca

of a world beyond its own

ship-wrecked Mass.

Flotsam nest of dreams.

I’ve been here before – at this

sober end of a carnival night

that’s passed without sleep and

hopes to be home by morning.

Ah, you've captured the masquerade of Venice Carnival in your piece of murano glass poem; multi-faceted.

I'm doing a ppt on Italy at the moment and it's interesting to recall the language of the fan as the beautiful ladies signalled their intentions to eager suitors with a mere movement of the fluttering fan. There was a whole vocabulary of messages that the cognoscenti understood and acted upon. Imagine the glittering ball and finding out who's really behind that mask ... alba parietti? Ciao!

I've not been there, but I know that feeling of disbelief when you're at an amazing location. Very humbling. Great writing, Kate!

In my travels, I deliberately avoided churches. My mistake--but
happily, dear Kate, I can share your impressions. -gene.

your response to this vivid, visual experience is remarkably reflective through your choice of words via images, and syntactic expression ... you have explored your subjective impressions through a most uniquely layered objectivity...

Dreamy poetry, with its glorious descriptions.
The last stanza brings memories of those dreadful hours waiting in no mans land for the flight home. And making the most of the final, endless, hours.

I see city streets paved with water, a claustrophobic bricks and mortar jungle too dense for any plant life to grow, with the stench of ancient pride, that would rather sink in its history than be modenised to survive. Beyond that, my pretty friend, I'm lost xx

A Canaletto mecca intrigues me Kate. I am certain that I have the liberty of interpreting it as I sense is in the proper context. Ah, a rendering delivering many artistic impressions of Venice. A sanctuary, a raised habitat for humanity in the midst of an ocean. What mindset one wonders envisioned it as, home. When the elements conspire the place will become a ship of humanities adrift. The routes without roots is so marvelously descriptive. And the "sober end of a carnival night" is superbly revealing. "You do Venezian Pastiche" marvelously my dear friend. And not a gondola to be heard from. I bid you love and peace. Jon Michael

At least hopes to be at somebody's home by morning. What a kaleidoscope of visuals and smells (fish-scaled memory) as I meandered through the labyrinth of words and phrases (No trees, no roots – but routes:) Gotta love it.

I am left quite in awe before this kaleidoscope of colour and feelings evoked via your verses, Kate. In my humble estimation, this is magnificent poetry. Thank you for sharing your gift. Love and best wishes,
