I love democracy, Australia, and the Aussies! You are too level-headed and strong-willed to allow a bunch of foul-mouthed, right-wing ideologues take over your country. I will go to my grave fighting the !.#$%^& knuckle draggers here. First, we need to put a few thousand of them in prison. Keep writing, but I doubt if you can stop them with kindness.
While the Internet has created a global village of discourse, its underside has become the way that those who have fear, whether it would be natural or imagined, can find allies and increase their fear levels by being manipulated by politicians interested in the psychology of voters. While wealth has always had a strong influence on politics, for example, most of the US presidents were already wealthy, wealth has become paramount in controlling elections.
Unless we can restore citizen participation in government without huge pay rewards, I'm afraid our democracies around the world are threatened. Partly by the people left out of wealth and the wealthy who are manipulating them.
