they don’t walk hand and in hand

and though I don’t always say it

doesn’t mean I don’t understand

This is the whole point of this poem Fee. We can reach out to those we love and those in need, by simply saying, "I know". But those two words should be used because "we know", not because we feel sorry for the person's emotions.
