~ A Nature Walk ~

Crossing over a rustic log bridge
that spans a babbling stream
riverbanks strewn in wildflowers
as the water's mist makes them gleam

On the other side of the bridge
the scenery takes a dramatic turn
from a deep dank green of the river basin
to a stunning forest skirted with ferns

Where sunlight spear's down
in lighted shafts, ending in pools
Ancient trees grow straight as soldiers
tall giants on lush moss, green and cool

Tree tops whispering in a wind
that can't reach the forest floor
Fairy flowers hiding in the shade
or dancing near a fitful stream's roar

A thundering waterfall
tumbling down the face of a cliff
spilling itself into a stream
that gurgles placidly as it drifts

The stillness is broken only
by water sounds and birds chattering in trees
as the top branches tower
spearing the sky, dancing in a breeze

Night arrives draping over the day
beginning at the base of the trees
working up to the highest branches
touching the sky, and setting the stars free
