~ Gentle Giants ~

Another area of neglect is the sea

mostly due to man’s insatiable greed

The ecology will become unbalanced

if humans can’t stop this useless need

So many magnificent creatures

live beneath, in the mighty seas

If man does not change his ways

slowly they will disappear, ceasing to be

~~

One species heading toward extinction

are the gentle giants of the sea

Across untold years whalers hunt and kill

for only meat, blubber and baleen

~~

These graceful, glorious creatures

are the gentle humpback whales

capable of a dive of five thousand feet

with just a flip of their giant tails

~~

They serenade an unknown audience

with their mystical singing abilities

sometimes called the “songsters of the sea”

for their haunting, melancholy melodies

~~

In the end, we will only conserve

only that for which we love and have fought

we will love only what we understand

and we understand only what we are taught
