Moon Dance

Once…

under a star washed ocean in

ring stone round we’d dance. Skyclad

amongst moonbeam and meadow sweet,

hand in hand  round a bonfire of blessed aromas

rhythmically swaying to the drumming beat

with the sky beneath our feet.

In groves of Oak with mistletoe we’d invoke

sprits of the past and otherworldly folk.

Spinning like Jenny’s in our widdershins jig

Moon-dancing with posy, branch and twig.

With our environment in ecstasy complete

all the time with the sky beneath our feet.

The wayward children of Mother Earth

used to listen to the night when it spoke

in shadow tongue. As times wheel turned

her song was never heard, bonfires no longer burned

our declaration of indifference

well earned

and Gods we no longer greet

with the sky beneath our feet.

Beautifully penned piece, Paul. Is it too late to re-capture that ancient wisdom and discover "the sky beneath our feet"?

This reads like the opening script of a movie. In fact, it offers up so much vivid imagery I could practically write the movie myself, but would probably not do it justice...but you certainly have done the topic justice. The meter is rhymic like a dance, this would be dynamite read aloud and I am driven to read it over & over. Pleased to make your aquaintence, Paul...

A magnificent poetic moon dance - felt like I was there - and to me it truly is a shame that we have become so indifferent towards Mother Earth and all her mystic charms in our now far too often chaotic world.

My precious friend, A masterful brilliant write. I especially loved the words 'star washed ocean' Wow it sounds so good! I could pick out so many lines that impacted upon me but let me rather just say that I think this is fantastic! Congrats!

Paul, Your work is not only outstanding but what one might be influenced to believe as, visual.
I read this once, then before I reviewed, I was drawn back to read again.
I related to this, almost as though, I had been given these very thoughts, and left them in drydock.
Excellent work, and Thanks for sharing it.

I'll get you, Turner, that's a lie!! And Star is pretty much right in that these kind of rituals do still take place there on Midsummer's Day - probably on the other 364 days of the year as well, if the truth be known. It truly is still an awesomely spiritual place, despite having been turned into a complete tourist circus - probably started by the Romans when they built the A303! But, 40 years' ago you could still walk amongst the Stones and carve your name into them (!!!) - not so now they are ringfenced to a distance of a hundred yards or more. Sorry, I digress... you have created a mystical and evocative atmosphere with some wonderful and unique imagery and phrasing here, Paul: "under a star washed ocean"; "skyclad"; "listen to the night when it spoke in shadow tongue" - love these poetic epithets. And the whole notion of having the sky beneath our feet is glorious and completes the sense of spinning and the movement of time. You have a gift of making rhyming verse seem lyrical and effortless. You must have a natural poetic melody and rhythm - you belong at Stonehenge!! TY Kate xx

Kate runs round there naked on 21 st.

Really great images, and atmosphere.

Wonder what the Romans made of it when they built the 303?

This had such a nice feel to it Paul, almosted remeinded me of the very lost beginning of Irish folklore, or perhaps even a bit sooner. I would imagine this sort of stuff took place in Stonehenge, well that is how I read it, and the celebrations in circles so meaning ful to me, ty Al

Dear Paul,

This is exquisite, such beautiful, soothing and warm images, you certainly have a way with words. This left me quite breathless and a tremendous sense of freedom. But alas, as you say, "when we were wiser" how sad that life overtakes us far too quickly. Thoroughly enjoyed this Paul, keep the golden quill flowing :)
