Things We Do For Love is a partial listing of the unending pursuits we all undertake.

And that is our undoing. The only thing we need do for love is give and share and receive. The rest is humankind's folly in chasing the image of love for our own selfish betterment. To feel we have to "do" anything for love is a reflection of our desire for what we term the attentions of loving.

Love is the personification of the first rule of philosophy: "A thing cannot be and not be."

You will know you have love when you feel cherished. There is no substitute. Love is either yours or it isn't. There is no in-between.

Why do we work so hard at something that is a gift? To chase love is akin to chasing rainbows. We either are loved or we aren't. And in the end, nothing else really matters.

Your poem feels comfortable because so many of us own it.

This is a call to LIVE and cherish life! Everyone is a precious light in this world that once extinguished, will shine no longer in our eyes. Luther had the GIFT. Genius is defined by it's uniqueness, and that he was! Power and tenderness in one breath. One song that stands out in my head is 'A House Is Not A Home'. Fairly simple in lyric, but Luther wrang meaning out of every line and squeezed lonliness and despair in a haunting rendition that made me cry...

A total ignoramus, I'm afraid, until I read of him here and on Nordette's page - and then heard him extolled on the legendary Bob Harris's evening show last Saturday on my way back from London. But the confidence exuded by the bold statements of this write give me a flavour of the heart and soul of a man of flesh and spirit whose very character inspired and led. He must have been awesome! Aberjhani, this is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful soul. I did not know that he'd passed on today because I turned on no TV today or radio and did not go to any news sites. I've not been online much today actually. Luther and his music has gotten me through so many passages of my life, good and bad. I was just telling a Luther Vandross story to someone last night, actually, that a high school chorus teacher told Luther that he didn't have singing talent.

He's one of those singers who crosses my mind often. However, as much as I love his music, have most of his work in both CD and vinyl, I don't have anything of his up on my site except a link to his video "Dance with My Father." Thank you for this poem. We have lost a light. ~~Nordette
