Written in response to Phillip William Allen's Challenge. This was a nightmare I had 4-5 years ago. I never dreamt it again...Thank God!

Poem Artwork

The black dog's teeth were bared as white
As clapboard on a church's side
His great huge head was bowed in hate
There was nowhere for me to hide

His eyes glowed red as Virginia coal
From a furnace's unholy pyre I had no choice to save my soul
But to stand and face the fire

For as I turned to run from terror
I was grabbed by a lady in black
I prayed to God this was in error
As the lady escorted me back!

Back towards the snarling hound of hell
This way she did insist
The why and how I could not tell
As she tightened her grip 'round my wrist

The hound was waiting in the dark
Great droplets of drool met the dust
His breath sent clouds of foul remark
And into cold air were thrust

Low tenored growls that stopped my heart
Beyond the late winter's chill
And images of being torn apart
Remain within me still

As the beast advanced to seal my fate
I broke the evil lady's grip
And pushed her toward the hound of hate
I woke up with a bloody lip!

Wow this is totally powerful and now I know
what you meant about Black Dog...Whoa it
reminds me of a dream I had of a rabid coyote
that bit me on the arm and when I awoke my
arm hurt. Well it was asleep but anyway it
scared me a bit.

Frightening dream you had and usually I don't dream of hounds of hell but did dream once about a gorilla. I fell out of bed dreaming that he was chasing me. That woke me up. Had a black eye though.

Yup, something old Fred Zimmerman would have loved to direct.
Weird how dreams stay with us. The ones we want to forget that is..

Linda, I have bitten my lip more than just a time or two, because of a nightmare. But this is good Linda. Very dramatic, very on the edge of your seat action, and very vivid imagery. This is a very poignant and darkly beautiful story. May the Lord Jesus bless you, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & (((HUGS))), Barbie

Although it was certainly terrifying, you sure gave this nightmare a constructive twist, Linda... You caused me to dare projecting my own unconscious in the interpretation of this dream... and upon waking up, my lips were bloody because... I had bitten the evil lady and made friends with the dog (my dark unconscious)! :0)
Seriously, though, these nightmares are very anguishing, and you depicted this one in a flawless, excellent poem. Loved it!

That's quite a nightmare, Linda. I used to have one in which I fought a black demon - it wasn't a dog, though.

Whoa! Not a good dream. Waking up with a bloodied lip is icing on the cake. Although it makes for a really awesome poem, I hope you have more peaceful dreams from now on.

Reads like a Hammer House of Horror, Linda! Wonder if you got the bloody lip from waking yourself up after giving that Witch the push... or you were dreaming such things because you had somehow damaged yourself in your sleep? Our subconscious selves are a constant fascination and it's no wonder that their perhaps 7/8 or our existance, like icebergs, shape and mould the days that follow... glad you got yourself out of that one!! LOL Kate xx
