Once more our nation’s bogged down in Vietnam.
Only the name has changed, now it’s Afghanistan.
People daily cry: “Bring our warriors home:”
The blind, lame, the dead to lie beneath a stone.
Barack states bravely, "The Afghans’d be overrun.
The Taliban will see the country’s undone."
Obama’s quandary: “God, tell me what to do!
Democracy can’t be forced upon a world
Ruled by feared tribal leaders or warlords.”
Yet what seems a most sacrilegious act of all:
Declare an end—then leave the warfare hall.
Whatever do you tell mothers, wives, daughters, swain;
That their beloved soldier hath given his life in vain?
The songs and art in this book are about our collective emergence after the pandemic and trauma of the last few years - comprised of 5 collections: World as Refuge, Where We Live, In Our Hands, Rhythms of Change and What We See & Sow.
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
Doesn't seem like that day is any too soon though.
