a halo around her
head formed by
the canopy of
a covered wagon,

she doesn't
embrace the
domestic idea,

she can shoot
the head off a
running quail,

she travels the trail
of a reformed
soiled dove, singing
the ballad of Belle Starr,
"Belle Starr, Belle Starr,
With a bullet in your back,
Are you lyin' there a-wishin'
that you'd never joined
that pack?"

her black sisters of the
prairie, devoted daughters,
mothers, and wives
oppressed by bigotry,

Madonna of the prairie
doesn't consent to any
law she or her sex had no
part in making,

she is a strident voice for
emancipation,

as precious as a Victorian
cameo,

Madonna of the prairie,
she's not short on virtue
or religion,

her Indian wife, a metis,
mixed Indian and European
heritage makes a bed with her
on a hundred fertile acres that
never had a plow on it,

Madonna of the prairie reformed
from her life of prostitution,
raises money for the Salvation Army,
Red Cross, and the Miners Hospital,
the redlight district sympathetic and
charitable to her causes, shut down
the brothel temporarily to give
Madonna of the prairie use for
Sunday Services until she raised
enough funds for the construction
of the Madonna of the Prairie Church...

I do love stories with the flavor of the Old West. Very good.

Ah, the refreshing scent of the open prairie... Wonderful tribute to all those nameless frontier women of courage-- love the shooting the head of a running quail line! Very well done, Sage.
Peace,
Carolyn

the Mother Spirit rises from within the prairie to shower the landscape with the hope of empathy and fills those who she touches with light ...

Susan, Madonna of the Prairie was Molly Wingate, heroine on the Oregon Trail. She was a novel cover for Zane Grey's protagonist in his novel "Covered Wagon." Sweetwater style, I put a spin on this poem and actually has nothing to do with her...this is a made-up Sweetwater drama...thanks for your review. I appreciate it...

Sage...why haven't I heard of her before? This is very interesting and I'm happy that I found your pen tonight. I will delve further into the Madonna of the Prarie.

Peace...love and harmony!
