Poem Artwork

the mare swore
on Potomac horse
fever she was coming
back as a seeing-eye paint,
how many do you see, the
Ghostriders in the Sky bought
equine mortality insurance in
Pilot Point,

when you first see
them, (they can't see you)
wild mustangs, the Ghostriders
in the Sky in southern Utah, they're
optical illusions roping the wind, the
mare is their sentry, their eyes,

blinded by Potomac
horse fever, dormant
eyes dull, the mare their
seeing-eye paint, an inspirational
sight, her firebrand status unique,
the Ghostriders in the Sky, their
ethereal pasture vast, roping the
wind, the mare decision maker,
protecting her equine charges,

the Ghostriders in the Sky,
sightless herdmates conform
to the mare's movements, how
many do you see, they're optical
illusions roping the wind...

when probed into, optical illusions (ghost riders) have a tendency to reveal more than what's on the surface ... their nature is to mask their presence as much as possible so only sightless herdsmates can marvel at their movements ...

5 in front of the rocks. LOVE THIS!! "Seeing-eye paint" and the mare being the sentry are fabulous, as is the energy and integral illusions and allusions of this poem generally. Was spoonerising the spellings, and thought "groping the wind" was not an inappropriate misapprehension.... K xx

It's wonderful your repetitive use of phrases in this. Very powerful.

I have always loved the song Ghostriders In The Sky and always been fascinated by this stunning optical illusion picture, so your poem Sage completes the triology of three things I can love at once, sort of a holy trinity of the Western lore. Great job here.
