*LAREDO TEXAS - The Tick Riders are a 61-person U.S. Department of Agriculture "Tick Rider" force, a group that keeps watch over a 700-mile buffer zone along the Rio Grande from Brownsville to Del Rio.
They inspect both foreign strays and native ranch animals for the fever tick, a parasite eradicated from the U.S. 65 years ago that can transmit disease to cattle and could spread to the entire southeastern U.S. if not controlled.
The tick has managed to migrate beyond the 862-square mile permanent quarantine zone, an area from which cattle can't be removed unless they are free of ticks.

Years ago while vacationing in the north woods of Wisconsin
my son had a tick on his head, luckily the boys have crew cuts heads almosrt shaved so we could see it, and my brother-in-law put a cigaret to it and pulled it out. He said they pull their stingers out when burned. Anyway he didn't get sick so it worked, but I know someone who died from it up there. This brought back many memories. That was my first encounter with ticks, I'd never heard of them before that. They pulled one off a dog, once and stepped on it to show how much blood it had sucked out. They had to stomp it, the shell is so hard!...ET
