Bob Liston, a WWII Veteran who served under General Patton on a tank battalion told me this Veterans Day, “I‘m NOT a Hero”. He felt this way because he was not in actual combat. Still, he helped to round up Nazi troops as POW's and he could have easily been shot if they resisted him. However, he still felt that he was not a hero because that was his job. Now could just anyone do that job? I have to say, "No way!" So as far a I am concerned Bob Liston is a Hero in my book in every way!

“I‘m NOT a Hero” That’s what they say “I served my time; but a hero, no way!” Yes, you served in the armed forces and that sets you apart You were willing to take a bullet for us that could have pierced your heart You were willing to fight and die so your children and grandchildren could live FREE You were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and that’s a HERO to me! GOD Bless all who served in our countries Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Marines They took the oath to die for our freedom so let us take the time to "thank them" and think about what that oath means. This is a well done piece sire. Everyone is a hero to me but we just don't know it. In nigeria here every one is always for himself or herself. Almost no one is selfless and so when you make a downhearted person bubble to life, it is not seen as a heroic feat. Making the next person to you full of smiles is not a big deal. But these are the things that count. Just as the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus doesmt mean anything to so many people. So being heroic isn't all about wars alone. Not everyone has the opportunity to be involved in one and i never want to be. But the hero in us is deeply reflected in our daily lives. Our commitment to see that friend smile and feel loved is more heroic than conquering many soldiers.

My father was once interviewed by a 16 year old boy who was doing a project for his school on WWII Veterans. When the boy finished and turned to leave he thanked my father and thanked him again for his service. My father, a very modest man had tears in his eyes. My father kept a diary of when he served in WWII, and I'm proud to now have it. He's my hero! Thank you John for this wonderful poem.

My uncle served in the Army Air Corps from 1940 to 1960, and then consulted for 10 years more in places like Vietnam. I have in no way ever considered him to be a hero, only very fortunate to be able to retire after 20 years with a good pension as a major and live the good life ever since. He is now 93 years old, out surviving two sisters and three brothers. I found out recently that he did not leave the States during World War II. That is probably why he never held himself out to be heroic and I never thought of in that way, just a guy who learned how to fly after World War II, loved airplanes and had many hobbies. He still emails me frequently, having built his own computer from RadioShack many years ago.

Well said, John. I know a fellow you was just 19 years old, landed at Omaha Beach, fought his way down into France, back up to Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium, just in time for the Battle of the Bulge. He was captured by the Germans, was taken to the woods to be shot, but he bolted and ran, dodging bullets for 10 miles before getting back to his company. They went on to liberate town after town and 3 concentration camps, captured 70,000 German soldiers, while he left big chunks of his back on the battlefields. Today he is 88, but no hero. Just an ordinary guy. Like you, I'm stuck with him...until a real hero comes along. He's my brother.
