Hat's Off Johnny Boy!

I recall my mother insisting that I wear a hat whenever it was cold. Johnny Boy did not like wearing hats and did not always do what he was told...

Poem Artwork

 In my childhood days,

Mom always made me wear hats

Even though at the time

“it was definitely was not where it was at”.

Mom would put the ear flaps down,

She tucked the hat to fit snug till I frowned

and then sent me on my way to town.

If it was not too cold and the coast was clear

hats were off by the end of the day

Johnny Boy would come home with bright red ears!!!

Mom did not like that at all,

she was afraid her little boy would get a chill

and come down with a bad cold.

So why was I so rebellious?

Why could I just do what I was told?

Truth be known I looked around at my friends,

Some were nerds and others were very cool

Wanting to be like cool kids in school

I tried being independent by braking house rules

However, mother had a secret weapon

It was my Big Bad “Dad”

He was not so kind.

If I messed up, he would “Tan my behind”

Back to the future, these days in cold weather

No one tells me to wear a hat any more

But some relatives still call me “Johnny Boy”

So every now and then

to tell you the truth…

I really, miss that!

Mom, I am glad you were there!

PS: I "Thank God" for you Mom!

Love,

Johnny Boy

It seems that aunts and uncles have the hardest time learning that you're growing up. The few that I have living still call me, "Ronnie," no matter how many times I remind them that I left that nickname behind in high school.

My parents were more liberal. I never wore a hat, but would consent to a hood on my hunting coat when I went out all day deer hunting. Never even used the hood on my toggle button "cool" winter coat my mother bought at JCPenney. Since we often got 20° below zero my newly combed wet hair would often freeze within a few minutes walking to and from school. Whenever I felt my ears reaching frostbite, I would pull out my handy earmuffs and put them on until my ears were warm and then take them off again, sometimes several times on a skating afternoon on a cold day. I did get frostbite with skin peeling off a few times on my ears. I hated the earmuffs because they held my ears down, making them hurt after about five minutes--my ears naturally stuck out and didn't like being pinned back.

Now, if I'm out in the sun, I have to wear my straw hat or face a serious sunburn. I also have started putting a towel over my head when I sleep to help keep me warm on cold nights. How things have changed.

Thanks for the memory poem. You struck a chord in all of us with this one. Come to think of it, vanity got me nowhere except chilblains… Ha ha.

My kids would go out without a coat, and then freeze as they stuttered, "I'm not cold".

I never wore my hats either, Johnny Boy. I would run out of the house with my hat on, and quickly take it off and hide it somewhere near the house until I returned. Dear old Mom never knew. But I wear them now - especially when it's 20 Below around here.

I ran about all over the beaches of my home town all year around...never wearing a hat, rarely a coat, though I did get into trouble too, but the next day I did the same thing...the cold NEVER bothered me way back then...guess I was hot blooded...not anymore though...damn blood thinners I am taking, making me cold all the time...-e-

Your mother was "caring for you". That was her job. Lovely sentiment here.
