Regis Auffray wrote the following poetic lines which inspired me to write a poem about my engagement at 18 to Nancy B. "A Fellow from Hope" "There once was a fellow from Hope,Who constantly acted like a dope; With his shirt inside out, He went walking about, Begging every gal to elope." From these lines I conjured the following poem...

 GROWNING-UP AT 18

This was John Michael D.
A teenager once was he
But he wanted a gal
So he searched quite a while

John hung out in Greenwich Village back then
Went to the "Cafe Wha", now and then
Met a few girls, some sharks, others hens
Some nice, but most were just friends

John was like a tiger out a cage
So at 18, he wound up engaged
But once Nancy took the wig off her head
It scared John, and he did not want to wed

So they had a big fight in the park
That carried on late, until dark
Then Nancy thew her ring on the floor
Said she didn't want John no more!

So John took the diamond ring home
Gave it to his mom, who just lost one
So he became his mom's favorite son
Even though his mom only had ONE!

The contents of this story is true
It's now a secret between me and you!

PS: The photo is of my present wife Elizabeth. I have no photo of Nancy but Liz looks much like her, without that wig! LOL

Wow! Wigs and rings flying. It must have been a sight to see.

I never liked fakery, which it sounds like something you uncovered when she took off her wig. I hope no one gets "offended" by my saying that. I'm glad you discovered what was underneath the Nancy you thought you knew. Elizabeth was the one for you!

Wishing to be anonymous, I see you took the picture of your wife down in favor of your middle-age crazy obsession… Hot cars. What guy at 18 doesn't make that stupid decision? All three of my brothers did, and I didn't even fall for it when I was a junior in college and she proposed to me at the end of our first date. Of course, I didn't get her a ring and she ended up running off with a submariner (for an engagement ring?) and married shortly after a stodgy old account. Heard she died a couple of years ago, so she won't mind my writing this.

I would change the word "sharks" to peckers, as in "hen peckers." You may not approve of the double meaning. ;-)

Nice story with a happy ending. We'll call it the "ring of truth."
