Comedy Moving Forward in Reverse

Recently, I was in a high school classroom evaluating an instructor. He asked the class, who had formed six groups, to devise a school-appropriate funny joke. This was a competition about which team could get the most points. However, the students could not think of one joke. The class was DEAD silent for almost two minutes! That's pretty sad! During that time, I thought of three clean, funny jokes. However, I was not allowed to participate; I could only observe. Can it be that teenage kids today cannot express humor without vulgarity? I hope not, but there you have it. This is just one example of how society changes by being afraid to offend their peers. However, many curse, practice profanity, and insult their elders after school. Of course, they do, for it's common practice daily on TV and online.

FORWARD OR SHOULD WE GO BACKWARD? Has this generation lost its ability to tell tasteful jokes and comedy that's not downright raunchy and raw? The good news is that tasteful comedy still exists, but it seems like it's against the law. Seniors LOVE to watch old comedy movies and television shows over and over again. It's because we laugh so hard, so we like them just like a good friend! Red Skeleton had a gift of making us laugh without saying a word! What has happened lately? Most comedians can't wait to exploit the F - WORD! Alan Slater is probably the few comics today who can be funny without being crude. The old Jim Carey Pet Detective movies were very funny without being nasty and rude! TV series we love to watch several times and still be entertained are MONK, Jerry Steinfeld and Cheers. But today's comedy shows start off clean but after a while, diarrhea of the mouth can bring you to tears! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Anyway, I rest my case! ---------------------------------------------------------- Please let me know if you can think of any new movies or T.V. shows that have been able to pull off doing funny comedy without being downright distasteful and vulgar. I agree with you, though as I rarely, if ever, watch TV shows or movies other than documentaries I can't make any suggestions. I loved watching Red Skelton when I was a little girl. When Mom and Dad used to go sit out on the back step and visit with the neighbors, I would creep out of bed just to watch his show.

Most of my high school class told very crude jokes and disrespected their elders. Don't you remember? And secretly they got hold of records by Redd Foxx and especially Bo Diddley, but maybe they were too vulgar for you to observe.

While visiting me while I was studying in my doctoral program at WVU, my younger brothers started telling me many nigger jokes that they thought were funny until I told them that I didn't think that they were and that they shouldn't be passing those stupid, ignorant jokes on. That was about 1973 when they were in high school and should've known better.

I'm senior, but don't watch any of the old TV shows that I watched when I was young like Happy Days and All in the Family. I remember when they brought in the movie coding system because of the vile movies that were being produced that needed an X rating, or worse, XXX. Great movies like Midnight Cowboy, Fanny, The Pawnbroker, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf , Catch-22 and Deliverance.
