The Albatross--One More Reason Smoking Is Dangerous to Health

Water, Water, Everywhere, But Not a Fish to Eat.

Poem Artwork

The old man went out one day,
to fish the Soilent Sea.
Its iridescent beauty,
belied the truth that be.

He passed the tar babies,
playing on the beach.
Lots of tar balls to play with,
within easy reach.

One hundred days or more,
the old man had fished in vain.
Greased against the baking sun,
or drenched in slippery rain.

His pension had been cut in half,
the big oil crash brought it down.
Further cuts were on the way,
there was no end to frown.

His village was starving,
he had to catch some fish.
Black Gold had meant him nothing,
to survive was his only wish.

The albatross around his neck,
the old man wore with pride.
It fell into his boat one day,
as he cleaned it gently, it died.

A turtle floats up occasionally,
its meat tastes like hell.
He takes the turtle up anyway,
can always use the shell.

There are no fish, no shrimp, no eel,
the Gulf is nearly barren.
It's terrible to see the dolphin die.
Even the vultures die from carrion.

And so he set sail one more day,
upon the Soilent Sea.
The old man's days already numbered,
what will be will be.

A sad, harsh, but very real portrayal of the way things are, Ron. Thank you. Love and peace,

E x c e l l e n t !! SO disturbing that regulatory measures were not
taken in time to prevent wildlife and people's livings from being
destroyed by corporate policies driven by greed and. . .just plain
stupidity?? You have done a wondcrful job of highlighting the
ruination. Tugging at heart-strings while hopefully tweaking
consciences! G R E A T. W O R K !!!!! xOx Pea xOx

Excellent poem, Ron. Excellent. And you put it in the correct category: Crime. Those who would bring resources to us have total responsibility for maintaining ecological integrity. Shortcuts to profits cannot be allowed, no matter the consequences to those profits. The Gulf was already in trouble. Now it will be decades before the harm is undone, if it ever is.
Best regards,
Leland

Ron, this is excellent poetry my friend -- "The Old Man and The Sea", an important message, ala a twenty-first century touch of "Soylent Green", all intricately worded and crafted to create a marvelous rendering -- this work of yours will stand the test of time and be apropos as long as man walks upon earth's surface -- may peace and love be always with you -- Jon Michael

Truly "an Old Man & the Sea" for our troubled times. IF there is a god of the sea "he" should be heartbroken by now as he would know what is unfolding. Even 'ol Hemmingway could not have imagined the play out of this plot in his novel And sadly, even today the old ones still fish off of the North coast of Cuba and they are probably going to be hit the hardest along with the Keys. I am rushing to dust off my saltwater surf equipment this week, got my car fixed and I am determined to get the 70 miles to what may be my last "clean" surf fishing trip soon. I hope I get it in time. There's a low forming in the Bahamas that could push in Gulfstream water with days of onshore winds. I drop u a report on returning...WE NEED TO SHOUT TO PLUG THAT Gushing Hole out there!

Nicely written, I hope that it never comes to that. The "Black Gold" could eventually wind up in the Atlantic.

GOD BLESS YOU
