Land of the Lost

In the land of the lost,
you can't be found.
Nothing is familiar.
Nothing is sound.

The womb that you came from,
was safe and warm.
You floated on dreams,
free from all harm.

But now you're cast out,
into the land of the lost.
You see nothing to profit,
only your growing cost.

Of a life not worth living,
though tedious as hell.
You go through the motions,
but never can, ever tell.

If you'll ever find your way,
out of this self-made morass.
Your only response is,
to "Kiss my ass."

But that doesn't solve,
the state that you're in.
You can call it, "failure."
You could even call it, "sin."

But that won't change,
the deep do you're in.
Until you find your own way,
when it's sink or swim.

So you'll go on searching,
the boundaries of your past.
Seeking fulfillment,
that doesn't last.

For no one escapes,
the land of the lost.
Where dreams come to haunt,
and you turn and toss.

Where the night never ends,
and that day never comes.
And you're left in the limbo,
your afterlife becomes.

Do not many writers touch down frequently in this Land of the Lost?! Sinking into Limbo with a feeling of no hope of return, light failing, night becoming day...and then almost miraculously as if snapped out of a trance wake up with a fresh view of life and a beam on our faces that no one can wipe off. For, dear Poet, the light is stronger than the dark!

With respect and appreciation,

Hi Ron,
Its strange how certain poems send readers in different directions.

I my case the “Land of the lost”, brought back a time recently, when a relatively simple operation went horribly wrong with severe life threatening infections, resulting in a six month stay in hospital, four operations, and month on a life support machine.

That twilight period was a strange one; the mind seems to enjoy taking one on mystery tours.
I actually thought that I was finally being processed for hell; it never occurred to me that I might have gone somewhere other.

Ron you have described life in a more philosophical way that depicts our fears and hopes and what the future have in store for us.
Well done my friend.

Dead right, Ron! No one escapes, but I guess that's the condition of being human. If there were some inbuilt gene, maybe we'd know already and fear the future less. But given there isn't, we all walk our separate paths-and who knows where they can take us? I think a lot about Goethe's "Faust", the knowledge the bloke had but the determination to push it farther, whatever the cost. In that scenario the "boundaries of your past" don't matter What matters is what we can become. Not rich, nothing like that, just able to understand. No failure, no sin...I guess what we're talking about here is thought. And all of us have the right to that. Nothing safe though, nothing warm. That's the challenge we face.

You're doing so well. don't give up now!

Love to you,

Paddy

Dreams don't come true, until you've been lost....and, only then do nights turn into day and tomorrow is a reality.

God Bless You,

If our pupose in writing anything is to 'reach' others, look at this nice list of 'others' you have reached with this poem. I use my yellow highlighter on this stanza: "So you'll go on searching,/the boundaries of your past./Seeking fulfillment,/that doesn't last." Melodic, insightful, great use of 'boundaries' as a confinement term applied to our 'pasts'. Good, Ron. ~~ Diana

I don't see you as lost my friend Ron! I see you as an amazing writer and such talent! I like the womb and the warmth of it!! I go to that state of mind and feel the presence of who I am there...that is who you are! If we could be whatever we wanted ...what would it be? Would you be who you are today, the talent of the writer you are? Our existence today is because of who we are now...

You are a great writer Ron, I heard an expression years ago...remember who you are!

I treasure you!
Teresa!

My my what a dim view after birth
We all walk a path of learning,
it is how we all view it... I shudder
to think that all would see it this
way instead of learning wisdom on
their way...

However, very well done Ron as usual :)

Some disenchantment in this, Ron. And I can imagine that the feeling may be exacerbated given some of the comments below. A poet friend of mine once said: "some days are diamonds, some days are rocks." It seems the pendulum swings hard for everyone. Your work is honest and touching and always disciplined. I can relate. Peace ...

Ron, in the end it all comes down to self accountability. Too many attempt to hold someone or something other than themselves accountable for their personal failures. An honest look into the mirror always reveals the truth. The person we should most fear is always looking directly back at us. Good write. I wish you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

Our nation is truly a Land of the Lost these extremely sad days. So many lost souls - both human and non human - and so few are attempting to help them find their way home.

I had written a very complimentary response to this poem, but after reading Mr. Edward Phillips comment I trashed it.
