My Gun

I hunted for food legally, unlike many of my
contemporaries who enjoyed destructive
shooting, until I was 20 and lost my hands
to paralysis. I owned a 22 automatic rifle
and a 16 gauge bolt action shotgun, and
considered target practice a waste of
ammunition. A pistol had no purpose for
hunting and is primarily designed to shoot
other humans at close range, so I never
desired owning one. I'm glad that I was
unable to use a gun and have lived without
one in my house for the rest of my life.
My best protection is 911, not a gun.

 My Gun

My gun is my freedom,
my God given right.
I aim to kill, and to win,
whatever, the fight.

My heroes are shooters,
who kill with great skill,
so I practice and I practice,
to make a clean kill.

Happiness is a warm gun,
close by my side.
It helps hide my fear,
and bolster my pride.

For the world is very dangerous,
from the news that I read.
Full of terrorists and bad guys,
and I don't want to bleed.

My dominion over animals,
is clear with my gun.
I shoot what I want,
for sport and for fun.

No bear, snake, wolf or lion,
will harm me or my kin.
I shoot them for trophies,
and treasure their skin.

My gun is locked away,
where it will do no harm.
Just where I can't use it,
when faced with alarm.

So I keep it close and handy,
near my bed or in my car.
Where the kids always find it,
and things go bizarre.

My gun will protect me,
from all kinds of harm.
I will use it in anger,
my foes to disarm.

I will use it in anger,
with a magazine to spare,
for the more shots that I have,
the more that I will scare.

And when I am through,
I will do myself in.
Justified in all the killing,
because revenge is no sin.

I will use it in sorrow,
in depression and guilt.
For my human frailty,
is just the way that I'm built.

My final freedom,
is to do myself in,
with a shot to my temple,
and a shock to my kin.

I like your write very much. There are so many that abuse the use of firearms and their uniforms. They feel superior to all and tend to act accordingly

Good one, Ron. Shocking in intensity. Reminds me of the SAC bomber pilot I knew who was fond of saying, "There is nothing more dangerous than fascination ..." - except maybe a mixture of fascination and rage.

Ron, I found your Gun poem thought provoking, thanks. Peace, Joy and Love to you, thanks for sharing.

Ron, the poem is beautiful, very thought provoking. I agree with most of what you said. I grew up in a house with guns and people who knew how to use them. My father and grandfather were law enforcement. My mother and father met while target shoting at a stump and I own one. I was taught not to shoot anything I couldn't eat. And I must eat what I shot. So, I didn't hunt for trophies and most of what I ate came from the grocer. As a woman, I feel more safe with the gun in my house. I don't carry it with me any more. I was taught that guns were not toys and if i pulled the gun, be prepared to use it. Because of that I always felt in control and I never get mad enough to be out of control. I believe we do need to do something about who gets the guns in their hand. The gun laws today have armed vigilante groups who have a permit and a badge and have declared open season on certain people and they are backed by the gun law. Like was said, we don't hunt with pistols. I would like for some one to answer this question. Why are these big bad men who are superior to all other men so afraid of other men who are unarmed and they can't distinguish a cell phone from a gun?

I haven't heard any talk about our rights on owning
a gun, our forefathers put it in the constitution.
I own one for my own protection and have had it for
36 years...I don't want to kill anyone, but if it comes
to my life or theirs',(home invasion) you better believe
it will not be me. I know how to shoot.

Always,

Deborah

You have made quite a statement here..Guns are as dangerous now as they have always been, because we cannot control the human being that has one in their hands.
Good thought provoking poetry!
Peace love and light,

Good picture selection... Charlton Heston, the NRA super rep.
His reign was a parallel to Hugh Hefner... both "Trophy" hunters.
The latter one's "Bags" were certainly more pleasing to the eye!
Fired 22 caliber rifles & pistols as a teen. Qualified as a Sharpshooter w/
M-1 rifle .Ft. Knox, also fired 50 cal. machinegun & M-1 carbine.
Learned respect for firearms, and could not kill any innocent animal,
except a real "rat" one time. Never owned a real gun, but have two .177 Crosman
BB/ pellet guns... a bolt action pump rifle & a Colt replica gas cartridge pistol.
You are correct about mankind's Anger... there have been many many times I
could have Shot some Ass-hole to death... thank God no weapon was present!

NRA fanatics just think they are so MACHO ! I suspect that without their guns most would be Cowards when under pressure.

Guns don't shoot people... ASS-HOLES do!
We need a Ban on them ... ASS-HOLES !!!

Thought provoking and touching. I am certain a poem of this kind will give joy to the poet; its art will provide the delight of creation.

The one thing I can always count on here on AD is topics and works that allow us all to express our opinions and make us think. This work is no exception. Like many people, I can not shoot an animal. Perhaps fifty years ago, for food, it would have been a way of life for me as it is still in some areas of the world. However, as I told my friend when I took the course for my permit to carry, "If anyone breaks into my home again, they will be looking at the end of a 9mm. The animals wouldn't give me a reason to use the gun. Ron. A very thought provoking poem. It is my hope that you never shock your kin. :)

Thanks,
Chris

We are a gun loving (crazy) society. I have never understand the obsession of owning guns, especially the god given right mentality. One would think that guns and religion wouldn't mix, but there are many bible quoters that are fanatic gun toters. I have never understood peoples need or fear that they think they need to carry.
Other than a bb gun when I was A kid, I have never owned a gun. This is a well written piece.

Okay, you pretty much told it the way it is. This may come as a shocking surprise to you, but I never hunted, and never owned a gun except once in my life, and got in trouble over it. So except for a few short hours I never owned a gun of any type. During my two lost decades there were a few times when I wished I had a weapon, but never bought one, except for that one time. I hate trophy hunters, and controlled hunts. Killing animals for food is okay. At any rate, Ron, I am in your corner concerning guns.

A most erudite treatise on the "wrong" reasons to have access to guns. Unfortunately, as a species, we are hardwired for aggression and the tendency for violence. I've always understood hunting for food (I've never owned a gun, but was able to acquire my Expert Marksman medal as a Marine) and I've never acquired a tolerance for anyone who kills animals for sport My father hunted dear, elk, and pheasant every year to put meat on the table, but never for trophy. The increase in reported gun usage on humans in America is alarming but not surprising. Your poem should be read by any and all "conscious" gun owners.
