One of the sources of Halloween fear was being banished and hunted with winter coming.

Running Scared

Have you ever been scared?

Sweat scarred back bared?

Hunted down by the Laird.

Run, or you'll be snared!

But the night is dark and dim.

You can still run from him.

Not because yesterday's whim,

turned him with a ghoulish spin.

Where will you go in the night?

Will anyone share in your plight?

No, you are now on your own.

Far from here you must roam.

Go now before it is too late.

Go out in the dark to your fate.

He awaits in the shadows somewhere.

So the shadows you must beware.

Run until you see the sun.

Let it warm you until the day is done.

Run another night or two,

until your nights of running are through.

Winter is coming very soon.

You must find a safe, warm room.

Or you will surely freeze,

by the cold light of the moon.

MANY ARE STILL RUNNING RON, RUNNING SCARED AND THEY ARE LASHING OUT. BECAUSE...SEEMS WHAT THEY THOUGHT WAS DEAD HAS ONCE AGAIN RAISED IT'S UGLY HEAD. AND THOUGH THEY MAY NOT CARRY PHYSICAL SCARS THEY DO CARRY EMOTIONAL ONES HANDED DOWN FROM FOREFATHERS. BUT I LIKE YOUR 5TH & 6TH STANZAS VERY MUCH. THERE'S HOPE, FOR... IF ONE PRESSES-ON THEY SURELY WILL FIND A SAFE, WARM ROOM(THERE'S A PLACE FOR US)SOMEWHERE. THANKS FOR THE SHARE, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Ron,
Your poem creates a vivid image. I can related to being scared at times. I like the message of hope that nights of running will be over if I take action.
I love it.

I'm never afraid of the dark or those whom we can't see. The only thing that makes them be more fearful is that we can't see them. It's the mystery that most people are afraid of, not those things that they can't see.

Love how you integrated Nature in all its contrasts to further the message that life, like it or not, is a paradox of pleasure and fright. Well done, Ron.

So who's afraid of the big bad Laird or is it the bard chasing us to our scary cares, you should know Ron, since you are both that we run from each Halloween...-e-

I do like this one, Ron. A vivid image is created in both my mind and my imagination, but not of humans and supernatural bogeymen. Rather it is of a small furry creature, broughtg into being by nature's wisdomless but naturally innocent intent, to scurry instinctively from the pursuit of lethal predators, both known and unknown. It is a feeling that is almost Kafkaesque in essence and almost visceral. The elements of the chase, of the pending change of seasons and the remorselessness of the austere, chill moon's impersonal gaze are all masterfully well joined to create these effects. Very nice, indeed.

I've run from many a "laird," both imagined and not. Well written and very atmospheric.
